HÉLÉ LA GWINAD
Hélé La Gwinad is an ongoing photographic series exploring the cultural traditions of Grenada and the deep relationship between Grenadians and the land. Rooted in my diasporic connection to the island, the project considers how identity is shaped through ties to family, community, and the natural environment.
Working across the fishing town of Gouyave and the embodied energy of Spicemas, particularly J’ouvert, the series traces how culture is both lived and performed. From the rhythms of labour along the coast, to the quiet exchanges of everyday social life, and finally to the intensity of masquerade and ritual, the work moves through different expressions of Grenadian identity.
Rather than treating these moments as separate, the series sees them as interconnected—where land, people, and performance exist in constant dialogue. Hélé La Gwinad becomes a visual study of how tradition is carried, transformed, and released across generations on the island.
